Nestled on the picturesque banks of Nowra creek, just south of Wollongong, South Nowra has plenty of history and things to see for travellers of all ages. From excellent food and wine produced in the local region, to relaxing river cruises, there’s something for everybody in South Nowra and its surrounds.
The region is famous for its vineyards and fertile farmland, with its rich soils, and the nearby river inlet that forms part of Australia’s famous Oyster Coast. By basing yourself in South Nowra, you can sample all the excellent produce grown in the surrounding region and visit some of the many fine restaurants that are all within driving distance. If you’re looking for panoramic views, set off along Bens Walk and stop for a picture at Hanging Rock. If you’d rather embrace some rest and relaxation, head down to the river for some fishing or hop on one of the regular boat cruises. The surrounding region also has a number of intriguing historical locations that are well worth a visit.
In town, there are plenty of museums, galleries and other venues to enjoy. One of the town’s biggest attractions is Shoalhaven Zoo. If you want to raise the heart rate a little higher, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to soar high above the treetops on the flying foxes at the Trees Adventure Nowra Park. To further immerse yourself in nature, head for Nowra Wildlife Park, which overlooks the Shoalhaven River. The park is an excellent place to take kids and has excellent facilities for families, including barbecues and a camping reserve. Kids can up close to koalas with daily keeper talks taking place on weekdays at 11am, 1pm and 3pm, as well as on weekends at 11am and 2pm. Visitors can pet the koalas and have their photo taken as a souvenir.
On weekends, there’s also a reptile keeper on hand at 1pm who talks to crowds and takes questions. Some photo opportunities are also available at this time.
The park is open daily from 9-5 and admission is currently $14.00 for adults, $8.00 for concessions, and $10.00 for children and $40.00 for a family of two adults and two children.
