Welcome to Ayers Rock

Ayers Rock Airport is your gateway to Uluru, Kata Tjuta and the Red Centre. The airport connects Australia’s most iconic landmark with direct flights to Melbourne (3 hours), Sydney (3 hrs 30 mins, Alice Springs (50 mins) and Cairns (2 hrs 55 mins). The airport serves just under 300,000 passengers a year.

Ayers Rock Airport is also a hub for scenic flights aimed at tourists. Here, you can get a helicopter or plane tour of Uluru, Kata Tjuta, the dried-up salt flats of Lake Amadeus and Kings Canyon.

For a more up-close view of Uluru and Kata Tjuta, hire a Hertz car from Ayers Rock Airport. Uluru is a 30-minute drive from the airport and while the traditional owners, the Pitjantjatjara Anangu people, ask that visitors do not climb the rock, there are some really impressive walks to tackle. Try the 10.6km walk around the base of Uluru or the more manageable 2km return walk to Kantju Gorge. Either way, you have to see Uluru at sunset or sunrise, when the red rock appears to glow in the ethereal light.

Kata Tjuta is a 45-minute drive from Ayers Rock Airport. This impressive multi-domed geological formation offers the opportunity to escape your fellow tourists by taking the 7.4km Valley of the Winds walk.

Ayers Rock Airport serves the resort of Yulara. While very small, there are enough dining options to keep you satisfied. The Ilkari restaurant at the famous Sails in the Desert resort is a solid but pricey option. But for something truly memorable to celebrate your once-in-a-lifetime trip, you could go for one of the ‘fine dining in the desert’ experiences. Tali Wiru and Sounds of Silence are two options that include storytelling and/or music.
