Bundaberg is the gateway to the Southern Great Barrier Reef, making it a popular tourist destination all year round.
You can head to the reef from the mainland or perhaps visit the islands for a day or two for a mini-break in your holiday. Lady Elliot Island is a luxurious option, it’s an all-inclusive island that is located in the heart of the reef. Drive to the airport and take to the skies. Seeing the reef from the plane is a breathtaking experience. Snorkel and swim the day away, before heading back to the island for dinner and a good night’s sleep.
Closer to town is the Mon Repos Turtle Centre. It’s an incredible place that supports the largest concentration of nesting sea turtles in East Australia. Turtles frequent the Bundaberg region for half of the year: between November and January, turtles lay their nests, and between January and March, the hatching begins! It’s an incredible sight, and one not to miss. If you do visit the turtle centre, book in advance as this is a hugely popular place.
