If you find yourself on your way to Hervey Bay, consider yourself lucky. This region is one of the best holiday destinations in Queensland and draws visitors from all over the country and across the world. The area’s biggest claim to fame is that it offers the most up close and personal whale encounters in the world. Plus, it’s not far from World Heritage Listed Fraser Island – the largest sand island on the planet – and the beautiful Lady Elliot Island.
These are reasons enough to visit Hervey Bay, but it doesn’t stop there. The sheltered waters create an idyllic environment for swimming, sailing, fishing, diving and water sports at any time of year. The beachfront is dotted with alfresco cafes, parklands, picnic areas, shops, piers, playgrounds and a bustling marina. It’s not hard to see why it’s often referred to as the jewel in Queensland’s crown.
Like to keep things simple? You’ll have no trouble enjoying yourself as you soak up the sun at the beach, stroll along the waterfront and drop into one of the many local cafes and restaurants. If you’re more of an adventurous spirit, you’ll never get bored: go diving, jet skiing, yachting, wind surfing and anything else you like. You can even charter your own houseboat!
One of the best things to do during your stay in Hervey Bay is to ride along the Esplanade, which runs from Urangan Boat Harbour right through to Gatakers Bay. It’s also worth stopping by attractions such as the Botanical Gardens (don’t miss the Orchid House!), the WetSide Waterpark, Reefworld Aquarium and Shark Swim and the Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum.
