The area’s biggest claim to fame is that it offers the most up close and personal whale encounters in the world. Plus, it’s not far from World Heritage Listed Fraser Island – the largest sand island on the planet – and the beautiful Lady Elliot Island.

These are reasons enough to visit Hervey Bay, but it doesn’t stop there. The sheltered waters create an idyllic environment for swimming, sailing, fishing, diving and water sports at any time of year. The beachfront is dotted with alfresco cafes, parklands, picnic areas, shops, piers, playgrounds and a bustling marina. It’s not hard to see why it’s often referred to as the jewel in Queensland’s crown.

Like to keep things simple? You’ll have no trouble enjoying yourself as you soak up the sun at the beach, stroll along the waterfront and drop into one of the many local cafes and restaurants. If you’re more of an adventurous spirit, you’ll never get bored: go diving, jet skiing, yachting, wind surfing and anything else you like. You can even charter your own houseboat!

One of the best things to do during your stay in Hervey Bay is to ride along the Esplanade, which runs from Urangan Boat Harbour right through to Gatakers Bay. It’s also worth stopping by attractions such as the Botanical Gardens (don’t miss the Orchid House!), the WetSide Waterpark, Reefworld Aquarium and Shark Swim and the Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum.

A Quick Guide to Hervey Bay

The thousands of visitors that use Hervey Bay as a transit point on their way to Fraser Island are missing out on a real gem. Take your time to explore Hervey Bay and you’ll be rewarded with beautiful beaches and a host of unforgettable attractions to explore. 

Hervey Bay Esplanade Walk and Cycle Trail

You have the opportunity to really stretch your legs here – this gargantuan 15km walking and biking trail goes from Batakers Bay all the way to Urangan Harbour. The combination of waterfront views and shady trees makes this a pleasant trail to stroll or ride at any time of the year. There are several bike hire businesses working the trail, even some that rent cargo bikes and tandem bikes if you want to add some novelty to your ride. Along the way there are also several playgrounds and picnic areas along with plenty of seating so you can take it slow with regular breaks if you need to. 

Hervey Bay Jetty

Built in the 1900s this long pier is one of Hervey Bay’s most famous landmarks. The extreme tides here make it an interesting place to visit at different times of the day, to see both expansive sea views and the coastal flats full of interesting creatures. This is a favourite spot of the town’s keenest fishers as well, and if you fancy having a go yourself you can hire the needed equipment from the nearby bait shop and test your angling skills here. As the sun sets you will be treated to spectacular views that are sure to leave you utterly charmed. 

Botanical Beauty

Hervey Bay’s botanical gardens are well worth a visit. The gardens are arranged around an expansive central lake that is home to many species of birds, fish and turtles; the turtles are a particularly curious bunch who like to come and inspect visitors, so make sure you take the kids out on the pier for a lovely surprise. Make time to wander Chinese Garden, it is the perfect place to soak up the serenity. They have some scenic picnic spots here too along with gas BBQs so if you pack a basket of your favourite foods you can relax and take in the lovely views as you feast.

Every Wednesday and Sunday the Urangan Pier is transformed into a vibrant market. The Pier Park Family Market has a whole range of attractions to delight visitors of every age. There’s a farmer’s market section showcasing the very best of local produce and gourmet treats. If its arts, crafts, clothes and homewares you’re after, then you’ll want to peruse the Artisans Market here too – in addition to a lot of locally made treasures they have a wide range of toys and clothes for babies and kids here that make for great gifts. Best of all, a proportion of the proceeds from the market support local charities, schools and other worthy causes so you know that when you’re shopping here you’re also directly supporting the local community.
