Discover the Local Islands
Townsville is a fantastic location to use as a central hub; it’s a thriving town in itself, but just offshore are two of the most beautiful islands in the country waiting to be discovered.
Let’s start with Hinchinbrook Island. A hidden gem, this island is a wonderland for nature lovers. Camping on the island is available on the Thorsborne Trail, and with only 40 campers allowed at any one time, it’s a protected place full of wild beauty. While it might be hard to secure an overnight visit to the island, should you be successful, be sure to spend plenty of time exploring the incredible terrain. A sure highlight is the infinity pool at Zoe Falls.
The more famous island of the two is Magnetic Island. It attracts close to 300,000 people each year and is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Queensland. Keep your eyes up when walking around the island - it’s a fantastic place to spot koalas in the wild. The island’s most famous walk is the Forts Walk, which promises spectacular viewpoints throughout as well as a fascinating insight into the military history of Australia. The island was used as a base for the military between 1943 and 1945, and there are still plenty of defence structures throughout the island.
Of course, once you’ve finished exploring, it’s time to hit the beach. Thankfully, Magnetic Island has some incredible stretches of coastline, with Arthur Bay, Florence Bay, Horseshoe Bay, and Radical Bay, just to name a few.
