Welcome to Port Augusta. To the north, via the Stuart Highway, lie Alice Springs and, 2,700km away, Darwin. The Augusta Highway goes 300km south to Adelaide, while the Eyre Highway heads west across the emptiness of the Nullarbor to Perth, 2,300km away.
In Port Augusta itself, orientate yourself with a visit to the excellent Wadlata Outback Centre, which has won six state tourism awards. Here, you can find out about the history - ancient and modern - of the Outback. It’s an essential first stop before you continue on a tour of the Flinders Ranges or the Outback.
The Pichi Richi Railway is another attraction worth checking out before leaving town. This is the last surviving stretch of the narrow gauge railway that once formed part of the Ghan railway. Catch a vintage steam train from Port Augusta to Quorn and back.
Port Augusta Airport is the gateway to the Flinders Ranges National Park. Visitors flock here from across Australia to see the fabulous scenery of places such as Wilpena Pound and the Aboriginal art of Sacred Canyon and Arkaroo Rock.
