Perched at the head of the Spencer Gulf, Port Augusta is a major tourist hub, easily accessible by many of Australia’s major cities and situated at the gateway to the outback. The Pichi Pichi Railway is also a must-do experience, with the restored steam and diesel engine trains giving visitors a unique and picturesque way to explore the Flinders Ranges on the original Ghan route to Quorn.
Port Augusta itself has plenty of charm, offering the conveniences and comforts of a modern city with the warmth and welcome of a small town. A plethora of cafes and restaurants line the historic streets – enjoy quality seafood straight off the Gulf. If you’re on foot, the Coastal Path is one of the best ways to explore the city and its surrounds at a leisurely pace, even if you only feel like tackling part of it.
