Altona North is a suburb of Victoria, roughly 25 minutes’ drive from the Melbourne CBD. This spacious town harbours several parks and nature reserves, making it a charming escape from the busy metropolitan areas.
The Kororoit Creek Nature Reserve includes wetlands and a trail that follows the creek through the park. Birdwatchers will find plenty to keep them busy, while others will simply appreciate the serenity of this patch of nature. The creek is also a popular location for recreational fishing. The Altona Lakes Golf Course is picturesque and includes a driving range as well as the 9-hole course. There is a café on site so you can spend the whole day here if you so wish. Nearby is the Altona Miniature Railway, which is open to the public on the third Sunday of every month. Here you can take a ride around the 1.5km track on a scaled down engine, and learn more about model engineering.
For adventure a little further out, take a day trip to the Werribee Open Plains Zoo. Its African savannah is a main attraction, as you can take an off-road safari tour to see the animals at a much closer distance as they range. The zoo also does animal encounters and hosts a variety of children’s activities.
Altona North is a rather quiet suburb of Melbourne, which makes it an ideal getaway for those looking for a slower pace. The parks are worth a visit, and there’s always something happening at the Westgate Entertainment Centre if you do decide to liven things up.
