Uncovering Hidden Gems in Melbourne’s North
Campbellfield is a quiet residential pocket tucked away in the heart of Melbourne’s northern suburbs where you’ll find everything you need right on your doorstep. Forget the hustle and bustle or cosmopolitan flair of the big city out here and allow yourself to be pleasantly surprised by the region’s abundance of green spaces, as well as the area’s rich yet unassuming culture and heritage. While it’s one of the region’s fastest growing suburbs, it still holds tales of a fascinating rural past, and is home to a scattering of heritage listed sites dating back to the late 19th century, including Victoria’s oldest church.
Just a short drive away, you’ll find Woodlands Historic Park and Homestead, a unique and much-loved part of Victoria’s heritage. This historic park is one of the few remaining tracts of land in Melbourne that’s been preserved in a state similar to what Early European settlers would have encountered. Throughout the park, you’ll find culturally significant Aboriginal artefacts, historic ruins and abundant native wildlife. The park is also home to excellent walking trails where you can get out and stretch your legs. We recommend the Gellibrand Hill walk where you’ll be rewarded with spectacular 360 views of the Melbourne Metropolitan area, from the Great Dividing Range to Port Phillip Bay.
The centrepiece of Woodlands Historic Park is the heritage listed Woodlands Homestead, one of Australia’s first pre-constructed timber houses dating back to 1843. Historically an equine thoroughbred property, the homestead today houses an extensive collection of art and historic artefacts. The homestead also maintains ties to its roots in the equine racing industry. Living Legends, a nonprofit charity, has been operating on the site since 2006 caring for retired champion racing horses. Get up close and personal with equine royalty on a meet and mingle package, which includes a delectable morning tea or afternoon tea. For the full experience, book a private tour of the property, which includes a morning with the beautiful horses on the property, and delicious hamper lunch to enjoy in the gardens. Round out your visit to Woodlands with a stroll through the gorgeous heritage gardens, which have been beautifully restored and maintained over the years.
Just a short drive away in the neighbouring suburb of Epping, you’ll find Victoria’s largest wholesale market - Melbourne Market. This market is impressive in its scale of operations, supplying approximately 2,750 businesses across Victoria. While it is not open to the public, the fresh produce trading floor and the fresh flower market can be visited on a guided tour. Epping itself is a major hub in the Northern suburbs, where you’ll find retail options, cafes, bars, restaurants and entertainment options to enjoy during your time here. If you’re staying locally, make yourself at home at Quest Epping, a stylish and contemporary hotel conveniently located in the bustling commercial centre.
