Preston is a multicultural and artistic suburb of Melbourne, 10km north of theCBD. A train to central Melbourne takes 20 minutes.
Preston is home to a healthy mix of families, independent singles and long-established locals. It’s the kind of place where a cool ‘café-gallery’ can rub along nicely with an old-school flea market.
In fact, Preston Market is one of the suburb’s biggest draws. Traditionally a fruit and veg market, it is now also home to an artists’ section. Browse the wares and graze at one of the dine-in stalls.
Preston sits at the heart of the City of Darebin, which is known for its artistic and cultural prowess. As well as the artists selling their wares at Preston Market, there are a number of events, such as the Darebin Music Feast, which is held in October at live music venues in Preston and the neighbouring suburbs of Thornbury and Northcote.
As you would expect of a multicultural and thriving suburb, the food options here are plentiful and delicious. Carnivores will love Dexter, a popular barbecue-style restaurant, as well as the Stolberg Beer Cafe. For something less meaty, try Sartoria.
