A holiday to remember, with something for everyone

Mildura is a popular Victorian getaway destination, with a sunny Mediterranean climate, fantastic food and wine, and attractions that are both insightful and exciting.Mildura is situated on the banks of the famed Murray River, Australia’s most important waterway, which flows through three states and features heavily in Australian culture and history.

The fertile lands surrounding the riverbank have led Mildura and surrounds to be referred to as the food bowl of Australia, with good reason; from fresh produce to gourmet meals, the city is a food lovers paradise. Some firm favourite eateries include Stefano’s Café and the Wooden Door. There’s also plenty of excellent shopping, from markets to specialty stores, and lovers of fine wines will find cellar doors galore.

Start your day with a wander through the city centre before checking out the Mildura Visitor Centre to learn all about this exciting city and region, and chat to the very knowledgeable staff. Next, the Mildura Arts Centre & Rio Vista Homestead houses an excellent art collection in a gorgeous heritage building, and the RAAF Museum is a fascinating introduction to the military history of the region.

A visit to the lovely Chaffey House forms the start of the Chaffey Trail, which takes you to various places of historical significance in Mildura, such as the Psyche Bend Pump Station and the Chateau Mildura.

With so much to taste, see and do, Mildura is bound to enchant visitors and have you looking forward to your next trip.

Mildura’s reputation for total relaxation with gourmet flair makes it one of the most popular hinterland regions for tourists to flock to, and you’ll soon understand what makes it so treasured. Spend some time getting to know Mildura, and you’ll enjoy the best of food and entertainment, as the low-key vibe of this town steals your heart.

Paddle Steamer Cruise

Fully embrace all the romance of a bygone era, and take a trip on one of the Mildura Paddle Steamers. They have morning and afternoon cruises suitable for all ages, and they also do longer winery trips as well – surely one of the most unique ways to stock your cellar and sample some of the best vintages the region has on offer. If you’re looking to really fire up the romance, they also have sunset dinner cruises, perfect for couples. They have three hardworking ships running up and down the river, so make your choice and get out on the water.

Art in the Vault

There are plenty of gorgeous galleries in this art-and-culture focussed town but if you’re looking to explore something a little more avant-garde than the usual offerings, you will want to include the Art Vault in your itinerary. This vibrant space has three different areas, and it hosts a dizzying array of artists working in all kind of mediums. You’re never quite sure of what you’re going to discover on a visit here – whether it’s a fashion show, a printmaking demonstration, a potter, or painter, you are sure to be intrigued and entertained. They have a great collection of Indigenous art, along with all sorts of up and coming emerging artists creations. A visit here is sure to leave you inspired and ready to get stuck into your next creative project.

Barkindji Wiimpatya Murra Centre

If Indigenous art and culture is your jam, then you don’t want to miss seeing the Barkindji Wiimpatya Murra Centre – it’s a gallery and a cultural education space with a great range of programs running throughout the year. They focus on artwork, woodwork and jewellery for the most part here, so there are plenty of beautiful things for you to choose from. You can also see some very talented Aboriginal artists at work, along with a busy calendar of educational events, so soak up the history and the creativity here.

Blast from the Past

Let the kids get a glimpse of Mildura’s colonial past with a visit to the Mildura Homestead. Local history enthusiasts have built this re-recreation of one of Mildura’s oldest buildings and turned it into a fantastic place to explore history and have some fun. There’s a woolshed with sheep shearing displays, and lots of activities happening throughout the grounds. Created as a time capsule of the past, you can see how people lived in the colonial days of Mildura, and get involved in one of the many activities on offer. Sure to be an educational and entertaining day out.
