Gateway to Melbourne's East

A mere 30 minute drive East from the Melbourne CBD is the leafy suburb ofMitcham. Once a site of orchard farms, the suburb has since become a hub of activity with its proximity to the city of Melbourne and a homely, welcoming feel.

Take a trip to the late 1800’s with a visit to the historic Schwerkolt Cottage, an original pioneer’s stone cottage surrounded by 2.25 hectares of bushland. Furnished in a period style and fitted with documents and photographs of the era, it offers a fascinating look at the history of the Mitcham area.

A short drive up Whitehorse Road takes you to the sprawling Halliday Park, a recreation spot for Mitcham families for many decades. With a recent playground update and many shaded tables and BBQ areas, it’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon with younger family members.

Just up the road is Box Hill, which is notable for its multicultural diversity. As a result of the growing Chinese community in the area, Box Hill is home to dozens of Chinese restaurants guaranteed to suit any budget and taste!

Further east is the bustling suburb of Ringwood, which has seen its fair share of makeovers in the last decade. Spend a day getting lost at the recently renovated Eastland Shopping Centre, offering over 350 specialty stores of food and fashion. If shopping isn’t for you, try the nearby Aquanation, featuring brand new, state of the art aquatic facilities.

With the Eastlink tollway running underneath and around the suburb, Mitcham is a suitable driving gateway to many of the delights of the outer-eastern metropolitan area. Once you’ve explored Mitcham and its surrounding suburbs, hop back in the car and head up to the Dandenongs for 360 degree views of metropolitan Melbourne, or explore the many wineries of the Yarra Valley.

A Quick Guide to Mitcham

One of Melbourne’s most picturesque suburbs in the east, Mitcham is a place of unexpected treasures. Spend some time exploring, and you’re sure to be intrigued by this leafy borough.

Yarran Dheran Butterflies

These suburban streets hold more than one hidden treasure, but it could be argued there’s none so special as the Yarran Dheran Nature Reserve. Even more surprising is the fact that this reserve has only existed in its current form since the 1970s. Literally a story of taking an area from “trash to treasure”, this was once the local landfill tip, until it was utterly transformed into a natural beauty. The Mullum Mullum Creek runs through this area and the name means “place of many butterflies”, and thanks to the efforts of hardworking environmentalists, the butterflies once again have a home here. You can learn more about them by following the Yarran Dheran Butterfly Food Trail, which has a number of information stations along the track so you can find out more about these beautiful creatures as you take in the surroundings. A group of volunteer guides are on hand every weekend to make sure your visit is as informative as it is entertaining.

Bargain Hunters Paradise

One of the things the locals love about Mitcham is the great selection of charity stores and op shops in the area – there’s at least half a dozen here, ranging from big ones run by the larger charities to tiny shops usually adjunct to church halls. Whether its clothes, bric-a-brac or an undiscovered antique that you’d most like to find you’ve got a good chance of finding it here. You can take your pick between the more thoughtfully curated offerings (with price tags to match) or take your chances on some “trash or treasure” jumble piles, where you’re sure to find all sorts of whimsical wonders along with some gems to prize. Cafes and other interesting shops and boutiques often surround them too, so you can really make a day of it.

Antonio Park Afternoons

One of the oldest parts of Mitcham houses a modest but beautifully appointed preserve – Antonio Park. With seven hectares to explore, there’s plenty to do here. It has a great playground for the kids to burn off some energy on, and a nice barbeque area as well, so you can pop a few snags on the barbie and take in some fresh air. There’s an abundance of birdlife here, with more than 150 different species calling the area home, including many at-risk birds like a mated pair of Powerful Owls, much-beloved by the locals. Botanical enthusiasts will also find some treasures here – the park has a number of very rare indigenous orchids as well, along with plenty of other native fauna and flora to explore. There’s a variety of walking trails to explore, from gentle strolls to more adventurous rambles, so depending on how much time you have you can take your pick and enjoy the scenery here.
