Shepparton is the main commercial and administrative centre for the surrounding communities which make up the City ofGreaterShepparton.
Shepparton was founded as a sheep station and river crossing in the 1840s on land belonging to the Yorta Yorta people. The town soon became an important railway junction, with goods-laden paddle steamers on the Goulburn River adding to the prosperity.
Today, Shepparton has Victoria’s second-largest Aboriginal population after Melbourne, with 10 per cent of the population identifying as Indigenous Australians. The city also has a large immigrant population, with post-war Italian immigrants and more recent arrivals from India and Afghanistan.
As well as being an industrial and agricultural centre, Shepparton is a perfect base for tourists to explore the wider region, which is famous for its food, wine and natural beauty.
