Discover the History of Wonthaggi
Wonthaggi has an interesting and impressive history. A core element of the Victorian mining history, there are plenty of above-ground heritage sites throughout Wonthaggi that you can visit while you’re here. The Wonthaggi mining history is nothing short of impressive, with over a million tonnes of coal produced between 1919 and 1931. Discover the past at the State Coal Mine Historic Reserve. There are tours that happen throughout the day here, where you’ll learn about the history while also viewing a mine site, exploring the historic buildings, and discovering photos and documents that illustrate the past.
Once you’re finished discovering the history here, you can head on to discover the nature around Wonthaggi. The Bass Coast is a beautiful part of Australia, with Wonthaggi being a core part of it. Visit the Baxter Wetlands Trail or the loop of Wonthaggi Tank Hill Reserve. Perhaps try the Wonthaggi East Area Trail if you want to keep it local on these walks.

Of course, one of the best aspects of the Bass Coast is the scenery. Why not drive to the start of the George Bass Coastal Walk and enjoy the views above the cliff tops and into the water below.
