Originally a port, today Geraldton is a vibrant coastal town, bustling with culture, and decorated with beaches of jaw-dropping beauty. But a trip to this lovely city would be incomplete without paying a visit to the spectacular Abrolhos Islands. A nearby archipelago of around 122 islands, this area is alive with stunning corals reefs and enchanting sealife. The islands themselves are home to a rich array of animals, including the rare painted quail and the tammar wallaby. Keep an eye out for migrating whales if you visit between August and November, too.
Back on the mainland, the region also boasts a dazzling display of various species of flora. Spend a day wandering amongst the wildflowers at the Chapman River Regional Park, or admire the spectacular surrounds at the nearby Mills Point lookout. Or, for a bit of history, take a look at the merry-go-round by the sea — a monument in honour of local novelist and proud Geraldtonian, Randolph Stow, who wrote extensively about his love for the city.
Arranged around a breathtaking coastline and surrounded with lush scenery, Geraldton is a place that simply must be seen to be believed. With so many natural wonders to be discovered, this is a place that's just waiting to be explored.
