Welshpool is a heavily industrialised, interesting, up-and-coming suburb of Perth, located south of the CBD. With such a plethora of space available, the coming years will see this area continue to develop as its warehouses, factories and commercial units transform into all manner of new things.
The suburb is well-connected to Perth CBD, which is just a 20-minute drive away. Further adventure awaits just 20 minutes further down the road, as Perth’s metropolitan area gives way to the countryside in the other direction.
Dining options in the area still mainly cater to the lunchtime office crowds that work nearby. However, there are some options should you find yourself here outside of office hours. The Aroma cafe chain has an outlet on Kewdale Road, while next door to that is the Kewdale Tavern, whose menu is heartier with seasonal, locally sourced food – and a great range of gluten-free options.
If you feel like exploring something a little different and indulging in a tipple, head for High Spirits Distillery, an independent, family-owned and operated Artisan Distillery producing spirits in small batches. Founded by brothers Michael and Jade, the distillery is the culmination of many years work and realisation of a dream. The distillery uses 100% Western Australian grown grains and botanicals to produce everything from scratch. It’s a grain to glass model – the true artisan way.
Conways Butchery is a local icon and has been the biggest supplier of African meat products in Welshpool for over 30 years. The family run butchery are experts in all African meat products, supplying produce from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Botswana, Mozambique, Zambia and Namibia. If you’re keen to try something different, head for and have a look and a chat.
For a break from the suburbs, head for Mundaring Weir, a beauty spot on the edge of Perth, just 30 minutes away. The weir is a dam across the Helena River that forms Lake C.Y. O’Connor. It’s a lovely spot for a walk and a picnic and in the summer, you can even catch a movie under the stars at the Kookaburra Outdoor Cinema.
Just 20 minutes’ drive away is an even more beautiful area, Lesmurdie Falls in Mundy Park. See a beautiful waterfall and panoramic views over the city of Perth. The waterfall is at its best in winter and spring after there’s been a bit of rainfall.
