Practically speaking, driving is the best way to get around a city that spreads out across more than 1,300 square kilometers. But driving isn’t just a means of getting from A to B in LA – it’s an attraction in itself, with iconic routes to experience for yourself.

Sunset Boulevard, which cuts across much of Los Angeles’ history – as well as its geography – connects the contrasting neighbourhoods of Echo Park, Beverly Hills and Pacific Palisades.

The Pacific Coast Highway is a long, coast-hugging stretch of freeway that delivers spectacular ocean views all the way to San Francisco. Meanwhile, a cruise down Rodeo Drive will make you feel every bit the celebrity as you hover around Hollywood.

The Los Angeles road system is comprised of multi-lane highways. To miss the worst of the traffic, avoid the main road during peak hours. Speed limits vary between 35mph (56km/h) in the inner city up to 65mph (104km/h) on two-lane freeways.

Unlike at home, you drive on the right. One thing to look out for on signs is a diamond-shaped pattern, which denotes a lane reserved for cars with at least two people on board.
