Every second year, the Adelaide Film Festival hits Adelaide, bringing with it a range of both Australian and international films. This is an exciting event involving film premieres as well as films that are both screened and financed by the festival. The films being showcased include feature films as well as documentaries, shorts and animations. The festival takes place across different venues including cinemas, galleries and public spaces.
In addition to the films there are also installations and experimental films, as well as film forums so if you’re a cinema buff, you can enjoy taking part in some in-depth conversations.
Adelaide Film Festival Theme
The festival is given a different theme each year. This year the theme is “Screen Worship”, celebrating different works for different types of screens including cinema, television, phone and computer screens.
What’s On at the Adelaide Film Festival
Many of the films showing at the Adelaide Film Festival are films which have been made in South Australia and funded by the festival itself. For example, the film Tracks, the true story of Robyn Davidson’s solo trek across the Australian desert on camels in 1997, was shot in South Australia. Other Australian films include 52 Tuesdays, The Australian Heat and Being Goode.
Special events taking place at the Adelaide Film Festival include:
- Eddie White in Conversation with Animators
- City Drive-Ins including Grease Sing-a-Long and Patrick
- Classic Creations – a Parade of Female Fads, Fashion and Fancy
There are also a number of “Meet the Makers” events, with the makers of several of the films being shown during the festival.
