Three hours north-east of Melbourne you’ll find a beautiful region known as the ‘High Country’. It sits between the Victorian Alps and the MurrayRiver, and is dotted with mountain ranges, rolling green hills, vineyards and antique stores. It’s a popular spot in the wintertime when the ski fields are open, but in the warmermonths it’s full of wildflowers and beautiful scenery. Here’s a sample of our favourite places to stay, restaurants to try and things to do in the region.

Pedal to Produce

If you like the idea of burning a few calories while you taste the delights of the region, the Pedal to Produce trails cover a number of suggested cycling trails through the region – ranging from very easy rides to longer jaunts. These trails take you through gorgeous scenery while you visit some of the food and wine highlights. You can go it alone on a self-guided tour following the suggested (or your own) route, or you can join up with a tour group for an all-inclusive experience.

Euroa Butter Factory

Once an old ice and butter factory, this red brick complex has been lovingly restored to become a first class events space with beautiful accommodation and gourmet catering. Whether for a special event or just a weekend away, you can choose from their six rooms and enjoy the creations of their international team of chefs. There’s beautiful gardens to enjoy and plenty of activities that can be organised for your enjoyment by the friendly staff.

Mansfield Zoo

You may have visited plenty of zoos, but it’s unlikely you’ve ever seen one like this – a small, family owned operation with a surprising range of animals to see. White lions, monkeys, deer and a range of Australian wildlife are all here to visit. There’s even an option to sleep-over at the zoo in a swag, so you can fall asleep under the stars and have exclusive access to the zoo. There’s many hand feeding sessions with some of the friendlier creatures in their care, so there’s plenty of opportunity to get really close to the furry and feathered residents of this special zoo.
