Whether you have children big or small, Townsville is a prime destination to take them. A family-friendly paradise, the city offers up a beautiful array of things to do with the whole family.
Teach them about marine life
Reef HQ Aquarium is a one-stop destination to learn everything there is to know about Australia’s water wonderlands. One must-see exhibit is the dedicated turtle hospital that cares for turtles injured in the ocean. Otherwise, explore the great unknown and come face-to-face with some of the most interesting aquatic animals.
Tackle the great outdoors
Hiking may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think ‘family fun’, but Castle Hill is one summit you can tackle even with the kids in tow. It won’t be too much of a struggle for even the littlest child to climb to the top, but once you’re there, you’ll be rewarded handsomely. Peaking at 286-metres, the pink granite monolith offers 360-degree views of Townsville and its surrounds.
Take a dip
Move yourself away from the raging waters of the surf beaches and discover one of Townsville’s more tranquil options for swimming spots. Child-friendly Alma Bay, located on Magnetic Island, is one of the top locations to take a dip and cool down for a moment. Boasting clear, still waters, the kids will love being able to swim around, make a sandcastle or two, and discover some beachside wildlife.
Billabong Sanctuary
Speaking of wildlife, the Billabong Sanctuary is home to an impressive array of native Australian wildlife, all of whom are bursting to meet you and your family. Aptly named, the sanctuary is located on the grounds of a billabong, making it the perfect place to discover the most beautiful natural sites. Attend a meet and greet with a furry friend, pet a kangaroo or koala, and view (from afar!) some snapping crocodiles.
