The humble hostel has come a long way since their first wave of popularity in the seventies – while shared dorm rooms are still a staple, they are no longer the only option, with many offering a range of rooms for a bit more privacy and space.

Cairns is a backpackers’ paradise, with a wide range of hostels ensuring a competitive market. Travellers are the winners with each striving to provide more amenities and higher quality for the most appealing price.

Here’s our choices for the best in backpacker accommodation while you’re in Cairns:

Nomads Cairns

The Nomads chain of hostels is well known for quality. It features an enormous pool that any upscale resort would be proud of and a beach volleyball court for energetic fun; the Serpent Bar and Bistro has great meals and a party every night of the week. There’s lots to do here and always someone to chat to.

Cairns City Backpackers

If you’d prefer a more peaceful haven, Cairns City Backpackers is a more serene option for budget conscious travellers. They have a ‘quiet time’ policy after 10.30pm every night so everyone can get a good night’s sleep for another day of adventuring. The location is central and convenient, but you’d hardly know you were in the heart of the city with the landscaped tropical garden making this backpacker’s an oasis of peaceful green. A great place to relax and kick back without doing a lot of damage to your wallet in the process.
