Venture to the Wild at Coorong National Park
Your first stop out of Adelaide and toward the Limestone Coast is the sensational Coorong National Park - about two hours’ drive in your rental car. There is a plethora of activities to explore in this picturesque region, from bird-watching to boating, bushwalking to kayaking. If this area looks familiar to you, it might be because it was famously featured in the iconic Australian film Storm Boy. For any travelers wanting to explore this parcel of wilderness on foot, some breezy bushwalks to check out include the Chinaman’s Well Historic Site Journey to Gold Walk (1 hour return, 1.3km) and the Lakes Nature Walk Trail (1 hour loop, 3km). The Chinaman’s Well is an intricate stone well from the gold rush era that is like stepping back in time to almost 200 years ago. The Jack Point Pelican Observatory Walk (20 mins return, 1.2km) is also an especially popular one to try, especially for families, journeying you through the dunes and out to a lookout that overlooks a pelican breeding area. While this area is brimming with a thriving natural environment that has played a significant role in the park’s history for thousands of years, there is also a lot of European history to discover from the years of early settlement. A self-guided history tour is the best way to explore this.
Taste the Ocean in Robe
From the lush green of the wilderness to the endless sparkling blue of the ocean, another hotspot to check out on the Limestone Coast is the sleepy seaside village of Robe. An hour and a half away from Coorong National Park, a stop in coastal Robe perfectly complements the natural wonderland of the forest you have come from. For activities to explore on dry land, make sure to park your car and get out on foot to wander along to the Robe Obelisk. This historic obelisk on Cape Dombey is a striking red and white set against the intense greenery of the bush that borders the ocean. The Old Gaol is another relic of history in Robe. While the buildings have fallen into disrepair and turned into rubble, certain parts of the walls have been rebuilt, so you can wander around and imagine life as a prisoner in the olden days. For activities for a warm day, there are plenty of water spots to check out around town. Long Beach is a favorite amongst locals and visitors alike, while Town Beach is great for families. There are even some incredible lakes to visit, like Little Dip Conservation Park and Lake Fellmongery (Ski Lake).

Journey Back to Adelaide by Kingston SE
Complete this serene journey of the Limestone Coast with a stop in the seaside town of Kingston SE on your way back to Adelaide. If you’re still looking for places to make a splash in the ocean, Kingston’s Long Beach (south) is a picturesque and safe spot to lay out on the sand and dip your toes in the waves. For more adventures amongst nature, head out to Butcher Gap Conservation Park for a taste of coastal scrub or Bernoulli Conservation Park for a mix of old lighthouse cottages and lush green bush. While you’re cruising around Kingston, you have to keep an eye out for the town’s iconic mascot: The Big Lobster, also known as ‘Larry’. You won’t miss this creature as you drive around town, and he makes for a perfect backdrop to selfies. Another must-do while you’re travelling around this coastal paradise is checking out Kingston’s wine region. The vineyard at Cape Jaffa is a perfect place to enjoy a good glass of red—just remember to always have a designated driver.
