You might know Byron Bay for its surfing culture, alternative lifestyle, drum circles and flower crowns, but don’t be fooled: while it still retains much of its youthful, free-spirited nature, thisbeachside escape has also become an exceptional destination for family holidays.

Do your kids just love the beach? Enough said. Think you might need a little more to keep them occupied? No problem. Byron Bay has plenty to offer families of all sizes, even if it’s just for a quick weekend getaway.

Hit the beach

What else could be on your mind after a long day on the road? The Byron Bay region is home to a variety of stunning beaches that are hard to beat. Main Beach is the best bet for families: it’s easily accessible, patrolled year-round and sheltered from large waves, making it perfect for little swimmers. Wategos Beach lies closer to the tip of Cape Byron (just north of the lighthouse) and is another great beach for families. It’s patrolled during summer, is sheltered from large waves and has a grassy picnic area nearby.

Get active

Byron Bay isn’t all lounging and loafing (not that we’d complain). There are plenty of ways for you and the kids to burn off some energy and enjoy some first-class experiences at the same time. It could be the most appropriate location in all of Australia to learn to surf, and there are plenty of schools ready to get you on the board. You can also go snorkelling, scuba diving, horse riding or even sea kayaking with the dolphins; for the particularly adventurous, head up in a hot air balloon or go skydiving. There is simply no excuse to get bored.

Eat, shop and explore

Byron Bay is a place that you can spend a day just strolling around. Be sure to include a walk up to the famous lighthouse, and stroll down the main strip to browse boutique shops full of gorgeous wares for adults and kids alike. It won’t be hard to refuel, as there are countless restaurants and casual cafes to stop by for a bite to eat.

Take a trip out of town

There’s plenty on offer in the centre of Byron Bay, but don’t miss out on the many other places to be explored in the region. One highlight for families is Macadamia Castle, a fun-filled activity park complete with mini golf, farm animals, a train ride and some of the best pancakes you’ll ever have. It’s also worth visiting Crystal Castle to explore the twisting labyrinth, magical gardens, peaceful rainforest and mystical statues.
