If you’ve had enough of Canberra’s endless labyrinth of roundabouts, it’s probably time to hit the open road. Here’s some of the best drives to do if you’re looking for great views and fun destinations:

Tidbinbilla Tourist Drive

Head out through the southern suburb of Gordon and you’ll be on your way to Tidbinbilla. This popular route takes in some gorgeous scenery heading through hills, forests and mountains before winding up at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. Make a stop at Corin Forest to try the Alpine Slide, or make a detour to take in the beauty of Gibraltar Falls – the details are all up to you.

The Sapphire Coast

Three hours out of Canberra will lead you to the gorgeous beachside town of Merimbula, a lovely spot to spend a weekend away. The drive there is particularly scenic, taking you through the alpine town of Cooma, the Snowy Mountains and Great Dividing Rage. Make a stop at the Nimmitabel Bakery for some of their famous pies. Down through Candelo and the rolling green hills of Bega Valley will see you descend from mountain to seaside, where the relaxing Merimbula awaits you.

Northern Beaches

Wollongong is just two and a half hours northeast from Canberra, and the road there brings you along the Grand Pacific Drive, a long drive of winding roads, sea views, seaside villages to explore and all the pleasures that sun, surf and sand have to offer. Make a stop along here, and if you’ve chosen well there’s a good chance you will have the beach to yourself.
