Welcome to Dubbo, the crossroads of New South Wales and the heart of the Great Western Plains. Out here, you’re halfway between the coast and the outback, a truly unique region filled with rugged wilderness and natural wonders, cultural attractions and all the charm and hospitality of country Australia. It’s time to pack up your Hertz rental car and get ready to explore Dubbo and surrounds as you embark on your very own Central West adventure. There is so much to do out this way, it’s hard to know where to begin.
The heart of the country
The easiest way to get yourself acquainted with the towns and villages of the Western Plains is on four wheels, and starting your journey at Dubbo Airport will make your travels around the region a breeze. After picking up your rental car, head 10 minutes down the road into the centre of town, where you’ll discover a city just bursting with charm, colonial history, and unique attractions. First up, you’ll want to recharge with coffee and brunch at Press, a local institution located inside a beautiful 1930’s cottage. After a delicious refuel, spend your morning exploring the streets of Dubbo on foot, where you’ll discover a buzzing city centre filled with beautiful heritage buildings and boutique stores to peruse.
The best way to get to know the Dubbo story is by following the footsteps of the area’s pioneers on a self-guided Heritage Walk. Amble along historic Macquarie Street, past some of the city’s most interesting and significant buildings including the old Court House, Post Office, and historic Victorian churches. End your walk at Old Dubbo Gaol, the most significant historical site in town. This iconic Dubbo attraction is home to a uniquely immersive and interactive exhibition all about life in a 19th century prison. If you’re looking to soak up some of the region’s local culture, history and art, head to the Western Plains Cultural Centre. This state-of-the-art complex is home to two major cultural spaces - the Dubbo Regional Gallery and Dubbo regional museum, where you’ll easily be able to fill out an afternoon across the multiple exhibitions and gallery spaces. If you’re lucky you might even catch a performance or show, so make sure to check out what’s on during your stay in Dubbo.
Experience Dubbo’s Wild Side
After spending a day soaking up the history and atmosphere of the city centre, check yourself in to Zoofari Lodge, by far the most unique accommodation experience in the Dubbo region. Located inside Taronga Western Plains Zoo, you’ll be treated to your very own slice of the African Safari, right outside of town. Staying at the on-site lodges is the best way to experience the magic of the zoo, which is home to over 350 species of animals from five continents. You’ll be treated to your very own private balcony with uninterrupted views of the savannah where animals roam freely. The Zoofari Lodge experience also includes two days of zoo admission, an exclusive guided tour, and meals at the on-site bar restaurant. This really is an all-inclusive safari experience you won’t forget.
As the sun sets, enjoy a stunning view across the savannah before heading across to the nearby Dubbo Observatory for excellent stargazing opportunities. Dubbo is home to some of the darkest skies in the country, and an astronomy and night sky viewing session will leave you in awe at the natural beauty of the starry night sky.
While you’re staying in the region, don’t miss the opportunity to head out on the open road in your Hertz rental car, the only way to truly appreciate the beauty and richness of the Western Plains first hand. Just south of town and a short drive from the zoo, you’ll find the heritage listed Dundullimal Homestead, believed to be the oldest surviving homestead in Australia. Explore the grounds of this beautifully restored 18th century working property, where you’ll gain insight into Australia’s colonial past. While you’re here, enjoy a bite to eat at the on-site Shed Cafe, located inside the old machinery shed.
Another must visit on any Dubbo adventure is Red Earth Estate, Dubbo’s own winery. This award-winning Estate is home to a fine selection of quality local wines and offers tastings, regional produce sampling, cheese platters and an excellent on-site restaurant to savour - make sure you nominate a designated driver if you do indulge in a tasting or two!
However you choose to do Dubbo, the city and surroundings will be sure to leave you feeling relaxed and refreshed after your perfect country escape. This charming city is the sort of place that will capture the hearts of those who visit, so why not stay a little longer and discover the magic of the Central West for yourself.
