Many people choose to holiday in Katoomba because of its proximity to the Blue Mountains.
The Blue Mountains are a World Heritage-listed site; the endless canyons, ancient rock formations, dense rainforests, and misty blue haze are a sight to behold.
Because of its beauty, history, and culture, it’s no wonder that the Blue Mountains are one of the most popular tourist sites in Australia. Thousands visit each year, with sites like the Three Sisters, Wentworth Falls, and the Grand Canyon proving to be some of the highlights.
The Three Sisters are just off Echo Point, which many see as the starting point of the Blue Mountains. Echo Point is just a 10-minute drive from the heart of Katoomba. The Three Sisters come from an Aboriginal legend; they’re three rock formations that were once three beautiful sisters, Meehni, Wimlah, and Gunnedoo. Admire their beauty before looking out to the horizon; the blue haze that blankets the rainforest canyons below is amazing.
While you’re in the Blue Mountains, perhaps head on a hike. There are many to choose from. The Grand Canyon takes you deep into the rainforest below, with waterfalls, streams, and beautiful canopies all proving to be spectacular. Wentworth Falls is an impressive hike, while the Empress Falls Track is just as popular. There’s also the newly opened Katoomba Falls Reserve Nightfall Track, where a lit pathway invites visitors to walk the track once the sun has set and see the scenery from an entirely new perspective.
While visiting the Blue Mountains, you might like to keep it local. Scenic World is a great place to visit; it’s home to the steepest passenger railway in the world, which you can ride while here. Enjoy the unique experiences and learn about the Aboriginal history and cultural significance here.
