Hike the Rock Hill Nature Reserve

When in Wagga Wagga, make time to check out The Rock Nature Reserve (Kengal), one of the best known landmarks in the Riverina region. Rising to a height of 364m, a hike to the top offers superb views of farmland and rolling hills and ranges. The hike is a three hour round trip, well worth taking. On a clear day, the view of Mt Kosciuszko are spectacular. The hike route is well maintained, with newly installed facilities such as information boards and picnic facilities, including fresh water, barbecues, shelters, tables and toilets.

Get lost in Wagga Wagga Botanic Gardens

When in town, jump in your rental car and head for Wagga Wagga Botanic Gardens, located at the base of Willans Hill, and set over 22 acres. The gardens are home to a mini zoo, free flight aviary, children's adventure playground, and rainforest section, all guaranteed to keep the kids occupied for hours.

Other attractions within the gardens include the Tree Chapel and Chinese pavilion. Various garden areas showcase camellias, cacti and succulents, proteas, Australian natives and roses.

The Willans Hill Miniature Railway operates the first and third Sunday of each month. The track runs through woodlands, a tunnel and over a bridge. It is always a highlight for kids. Train rides operate between 10.30am and 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4pm. Covered footwear is mandatory for those planning to ride the train.

For those who like to plan ahead, The Wagga Botanic Gardens Adventure Tour is a free, app-based adventure tour that will help you discover hidden treasures, rare plants and surprising facts about the botanic gardens.

Soak up the sun at Wagga Wagga Riverside Beach

For a more laid-back afternoon activity, jump in your hire car and head for Wagga Beach, located on the beautiful banks of the Murrumbidgee River, in the centre Wagga Wagga.

The riverside beach is extremely popular during the summer months, when the temperature climbs and the masses come to take a dip. You can relax on the shaded lawn, picnic on the banks of the river, or go for a swim in the cool river waters.

There are all kinds of amazing glass art pieces here, from the practical, to the wildly imaginative, and the collection truly shows off this versatile material in a way that you will find inspiring. The rest of the gallery is well worth a wander as well, with an interesting collection of pieces to explore.

Make a Splash

Nothing wears kids out more happily than a dip in the pool – and the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre is the perfect place to enjoy a swim. They have one outdoor and one heated indoor pool, so no matter the weather you’ll be able to have some fun here. They also have a “Turbo Pool”, with an artificial river that is lots of fun for swimmers of all ages, along with a children’s playground. For younger children there’s an artificial beach with all kinds of water based activities to enjoy. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a long day of driving. Of course there’s a café where you can get a well deserved cuppa as well.

Ride the Rails

Wagga Wagga Rail Heritage Station Museum & Model Railway has a name that’s quite a mouthful, and as it suggests, this is a haven for train enthusiasts. Spread across three buildings there is beautiful heritage architecture to explore, and all kinds of train related gadgetry – including the “Gang sheds” and yards, where you can see all manner of interesting exhibits. They take a hands-on approach to education and entertainment here, which the whole family are sure to enjoy.

Get the Good Oil

Leave your cares behind as you wander the gorgeous olive groves at Wollundry Grove Olives – Grown, processed, bottled and packed on site, this is the ultimate farm to table gourmet destination. The farm tour and tasting gives you the opportunity to see the entire process first hand, and to meet with the knowledgeable growers. Of course, there are plenty of chances to sample the delicious olive and olive oil as well, and you can pick up a few bottles to take home to your pantry for deliciousness that lasts well beyond your getaway.

Flying High

You can see some fantastic flying machines at the RAAF Wagga Aviation Heritage Centre, and learn about Wagga Wagga’s proud aviation history as well. The kids will love marvelling at the planes, militaria and other exhibits, and you’re sure to learn something as well. There’s a lot to see here and plenty of room to let the kids have a bit of a run around as well, which is sure to be welcome if they’ve been on the road for a while.
