Coolangatta is the southernmost suburb of the City of Gold Coast and is located just 10 minutes from the Gold Coast airport, making it the ideal place to pick up your rental car. Coolangatta is an underrated coastal oasis waiting to be explored. While most people head straight to Gold Coast, taking time to explore Coolangatta offers travellers the opportunity to experience something different, while still soaking up all the sunshine that the area has to offer.
Start with a day on The Strand at Coolangatta
Jump in your rental and head for The Strand at Coolangatta. The area has all the ingredients for the perfect day out, including beach bars, bistros, cafes and restaurants. If you’re in town on a Sunday, begin your day with a dip before heading for the local markets (on every second Sunday) where you’ll find all the best bargains, only a stone’s throw from the main strip.
Explore the City of Gold Coast in your rental car from Hertz Coolangatta
The atmosphere in Gold Coast is vastly different to the laid-back, coastal town vibe of Coolangatta, even though it’s only 20 minutes away in a rental car. All year round, Gold Coast bustles with travellers and backpackers who flock here for the sun, sand, surf and wonderful weather.
Begin by exploring the the central district of Surfers Paradise. Here you’ll find boutique shops along the main strip, and plenty of places where can book diving and snorkelling trips. There are plenty of impressive beaches and swimming spots to check out around the Gold Coast and Coolangatta area. Some we recommend seeing for yourself include Kirra Beach, Rainbow Bay, Burleigh Heads and Snapper Rocks.
Explore the greater Gold Coast region in your rental car
In contrast to the hustle and bustle of the Gold Coast, the outskirts of the city and regional Queensland has so much to offer visitors – and is easily accessible in a rental car.
From tropical paradise beaches, to expansive outback terrain and lush rainforests – Queensland has it all – and is deserving of its accolade as Australia’s premier holiday destination. The State of Queensland itself is five times the size of The UK and two and a half times bigger than Texas, which explains how it plays host to such incredibly diverse scenery.
Make your way to Tamborine Mountain
Just under an hour inland from Gold Coast is Tamborine Mountain. Here you’ll find pristine rainforest, located in the third oldest national park in the world. There are numerous walks and lookout points to enjoy, as well as the Tamborine Mountain Skywalk, which takes you on a trail through the forest canopy. After plenty of sun at the beach, some cool mountain air will be just what you need.
Swim at Currumbin Rock Pools
With a clear head and your lungs full of refreshing mountain air, jump back in your rental car and drive just over an hour south to Currumbin Rock Pools. Here you’ll find a natural oasis, with cascading waterfalls and lagoons set alongside lush, tropical rainforest. This is what holidays are made of.
On one side of the pools, you’ll find a deeper lagoon perfect for swimming, while on the other, there is a small waterfall with smooth rocks that has created a natural waterslide. Pack a picnic and spend an afternoon relaxing before setting off again.
Coolangatta and the Gold Coast has so much to offer travellers. For the best way to see it all, jump in a rental car and hit the road.
Wherever you choose to explore, you’ll get there in a rental car from Hertz.
