Welcome to Launceston.

There is a wealth of adventure waiting to be discovered as you touchdown at Launceston Airport. Set along the picturesque Tamar River, this riverside city boasts charming natural scenery – and it’s one of the few places where you have the opportunity to see Tasmanian Devils in the wild.

Launceston’s city features beautiful Colonial and Victorian architecture and is home to a burgeoning food scene where you can treat your tastebuds to tasty local produce and award-winning wines.

Urban Excursion

Head into the city from the airport and experience its unique allure. A few of the must-dos in the town are the weekend markets, Queen Victoria Museum, City Park and Prince’s Square. You’ll have your choice of weekend markets including Boardmills Market, Esk and Evandale Market, and Niche-market Bazaar (held biannually); all of the markets boast an array of hand-crafted, locally made bargains. Queen Victoria Museum is the largest regional gallery in Australia, hosting colonial and contemporary art as well as interactive displays.

City Park is perfect for a leisurely stroll to enjoy the massive oaks that hang above with Victorian décor throughout the park. Prince’s Square is a great spot for a picnic with a historical past of political gatherings and public hangings – explore all that these public spaces have to offer.

Launceston’s town centre is littered with delectable cafes, restaurants and bars, and is known for its trove of enticing eateries. Check out Stillwater, Wursthaus Kitchen, Davies Grand Central, Mudbar, Baker’s Lane, Saint John Craft Beer Bar and more to satisfy your tastebuds.

Wine for days. Many visitors take pleasure in visiting a few of the many wineries in the area surrounding Launceston straight from the airport. If you’re after some delicious cool-climate wines, there are plenty of tours that allow you to explore the depths of the region. Tamar Valley Wine Tour, Josef Chromy Winery Tour, Sharmans Wines, and Tamar Ridge Cellar Door are just a few names that will give you a proper Tassie experience.

And Beyond

Launceston is best known for perching close to the Cataract Gorge Reserve and Narawntapu National Park. Cataract Gorge is popular among locals and visitors for its hiking and biking trails, abundance of wildlife, and stunning gardens. Many sightseers journey to the scenic chairlift that transports you above the gorge for panoramic views. Narawntapu National Park is about a one-hour drive northwest of the city; this is the perfect destination to spot the infamous Tasmanian devil, kangaroos and wallabies in their natural habitat.

Lilydale Falls and Tamar Island Wetlands are also worthy destinations that are only a 15 and 25-minute drive respectively from Launceston’s city centre. Lilydale Falls Reserve features two waterfalls with a tranquil atmosphere – perfect for a peaceful walk or picnic. Tamar Island Wetlands are all about the local ecosystem. Learn about the environment and embark on a birdwatching expedition in the early afternoon.

For visitors who are seeking more action, explore the Hollybank Treetops where you can zipline across the sweeping Tasmanian landscape, hang glide over native bushland or climb/abseil with Rock Climbing Tasmania. Any of these areas are accessible from the airport.

Book your rental car at the airport and experience the freedom to customise your own tour of Tasmania’s second largest city.
