Situated between Sydney and Newcastle is the town of Gosford, a popular holiday destination on the New South Wales coast. The town is situated around a stunning natural waterfront, with beaches aplenty. Inland, dense bushland provides the perfect opportunity for hiking and trail walking. Gosford offers plenty to keep travellers entertained. And the best way to see the town and its surrounds is by hiring a rental car.
Enjoy for a rainforest walk
Jump in your rental car and head for Rumbalara Reserve, just a few short minutes from the town centre. Start the day with a relaxing walk out amongst the rainforest. The park is also littered with bronze sculptures and different walking tracks of varying degrees of difficulty. The Ironbark Loop takes in some of the magnificent scenery with a casual circuit, while tracks like the 6.1km Rumbalara Explorer are better suited to serious hikers looking to see everything the reserve has to offer.
Marvel at vintage automobiles
With a vast collection of vintage automobiles, including classic Italian sports cars and American muscle cars, the Gosford Classic Car Museum is an unmissable experience, whether you’re into cars or not. Since opening, the museum has quickly become one of the Central Coast’s top attractions – and it’s easy to see why. With more than 450 vehicles on display collectively valued at $70m, this represents a century’s worth of motoring and design history.
Wander gorgeous gardens
A short jaunt across town in your rental car will take you to Mt Penang Gardens. At more than 8 hectares in area, the unique gardens are adorned with pergolas, fountains and a cantilevered steel footbridge. Large dams and waterfalls also mean the gardens are home to a wide variety of waterbirds. A stroll around here offers an ideal opportunity for afternoon relaxation.
A stroll and a movie
The 5 Lands Walk links the coastal villages of Macmasters Beach, Copacabana, Avoca Beach, North Avoca and Terrigal. The 10km walk is especially busy in June when thousands of locals take part in an annual event celebrating local Indigenous Australian culture.
For an afternoon or evening at the movies, travel back in time and visit the historic Avoca Beach Picture Theatre, home to an international program of award winning releases. The cinema has been in the Hunter family for four generations, way back since it first began in the family’s front garden in 1948, more than 70 years ago. If you’re venturing further from the town, the Brisbane Water National Park is a must see, as are Avoca Beach and Woy Woy Bay. Whichever direction you choose to travel from the town, you’ll be met with glorious views and stunning natural surroundings. For something a little livelier, pop in to visit the Australian Reptile Park, west of Gosford, where you’ll meet some curious reptilian friends.
In town, there are smaller parks and reserves to visit, and The Imperial Centre Gosford will meet all your shopping needs. For more shopping, stop into some of the boutiques along Mann Street, in the city centre, and scattered throughout town. Gosford offers some fantastic dining opportunities, with many trading along Mann Street. Here you can sample a variety of cuisine including Thai, Nepalese and Italian.
Gosford has plenty to offer its visitors, with natural wonders to entertain all ages. For those who love getting out and about, Gosford is a dream come true.
Wherever you choose to explore, you’ll get there in a rental car from Hertz
