Known as the gateway to Fraser Island, Rainbow Beach is also a wonderful place to explore in its own right. From July-December don’t miss the opportunity to join a whale watching tour – one of the smaller boats with a “swim with the whales” option will enable you to get up close and personal with these gentle giants. Take a stroll down Urangan Pier, it’s almost a kilometre long but there’s plenty of benches along the way so you can take a break and enjoy the view. Hervey Bay also has a wide variety of seasonal open-air markets that cater to all tastes – do some shopping, enjoy something tasty from a food van and make a day of it.
