Miles is a small outback agricultural town, four hours north-west of Brisbane. While it may appear at the outset to be a sleepy town, still waters run deep and there is plenty for visitors to enjoy in this charming town that offers a taste of outback life, both historical and modern.
Explore Miles in your hire car
After a meal at one of Miles’ tasty cafes, visitors will enjoy a stroll around the town centre. An unmissable highlight is the quaint Miles Historical Village and Museum, an open-air museum that recreates turn-of-the-century outback life in this town. It’s also well worth visiting the Dogwood Crossing Centre just down the road, which celebrates the town’s past, history and future, and includes an excellent art gallery.
Golfers shouldn’t miss the excellent Miles Golf Course, and if you’re in town at the right time, make sure you don a fancy hat and savour a day of country horseracing at the Miles Racecourse.
A bit further afield, the town of Chinchilla also has a Historical Museum that’s well worth a visit, and it’s exciting to explore the differences and similarities between the stories and histories of the two towns; so much of what makes outback towns special is their stories, and these museums will whet your appetite to learn more and see more of regional Australian communities.
